FRL stands for Filter, Regulator, Lubricator

What does an FRL do?

Air leaving a compressor is hot, dirty, and wet – which can damage and shorten the life of downstream equipment, such as valves and cylinders. Before this air can be used, it needs to be filtered, regulated and lubricated. An FRL combines a filter, regulator, and lubricator into one component to keep air compressor systems in optimal working condition.

FRL Components

An FRL is comprised of three primary components: airline filter, pressure regulator and lubricator. Each of these individual components has its own role, supporting the larger air compressor system.


Filter: Removes particles and water from the incoming air, preventing damage to the system


Regulator: Maintains a constant output pressure into the system regardless of variations in the input pressure


Lubricator: Provides a controlled quantity of oil into the system to reduce the friction of moving parts

Insufficient Air Flow / Pressure

Insufficient air flow/pressure can reduce pump speed and limit hydraulic pressure.


Insufficient air flow and pressure can be created by:

  • Too small of an air system installed
  • Poorly maintained, leaking air systems
  • Too small air hose
  • Multiple tools using the air system at the same time


Insufficient air flow versus air pressure is more often the problem

  • LAT Lightweight Air Hydraulic Torque Wrench Pump input air flow range is 50 – 65 scfm
  • LAT Lightweight Air Hydraulic Torque Wrench Pump input air pressure range is 65 – 100 psi


Recommend use with a ¾" or larger air hose which are the most common in industrial settings

System Pressure Release

If air supply is lost during operation and hydraulic pressure gets trapped in the B port

  • LAT Lightweight Air Hydraulic Torque Wrench Pump: dump pressure using the relief valve, turn out CCW, no need to re-establish air supply
  • Other Air Pumps – Must re-establish air supply and dump pressure using directional valve


If air supply is not lost during operation and hydraulic pressure gets trapped in the B port

  • LAT Lightweight Air Hydraulic Torque Wrench Pump: Hold the red button and press the green button
  • Other Air Pumps: Actuate pendant button to dump pressure using the directional valve
